[historical fact] Ketchup was sold in the 1830s as medicine!

One surprising fact about ketchup is that it was originally marketed and sold as a medicine in the 1830s. The first ketchup recipes were made with ingredients like mushrooms, oysters, and walnuts, and were believed to have medicinal properties.

In fact, one early advertisement for ketchup claimed that it could cure scurvy, indigestion, and even diarrhea.

However, it wasn't until the addition of tomatoes in the late 19th century that ketchup became the popular condiment we know today.
